전 세계 코로나19 사망자 4명 중 1명이 브라질에서 발생하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 브라질 변이체의 영향이 큰 것으로 추정된다.
최근 일주일간 브라질 내 코로나19 평균 사망자수는 2542명으로, 전 세계 사망자수의 26%에 달한다. 지난주 토요일에는 코로나19 관련 사망자수가 3368명까지 치솟았다.
브라질 남부 도시인 상파울루에 위치한 묘지들에서는 수분에 한 명씩 코로나19 관련 사망자가 땅에 묻히고 있는 것으로 전해진다. CNN에 의하면 한 묘지 시설에는 하루 수용 가능한 시신의 3배 가까운 주검에 대한 화장 요청이 오고 있는 상황이다.
또한, AP통신에 따르면 브라질 의료 시스템도 위기를 맞고 있다. 집중치료병동이 거의 바닥난 상태다.
이처럼 브라질이 심각한 상황에 이른 것은 브라질에서 처음 출현한 코로나19 바이러스 변이체의 영향이 큰 것으로 분석된다.
브라질 변이체 P.1, 전염력 높고 백신 효과 떨어뜨려
현재 전 세계적으로 위세를 떨치는 코로나19 변이체로는 영국발 변이체인 B.1.1.7, 남아공발 변이체인 B.1.351, 그리고 브라질발 변이체인 P.1이 있다. 영국 변이체와 남아공 변이체는 지난해 9월과 10월 처음 발견됐고, 브라질 변이체는 가장 최근인 지난해 12월 발견됐다. 3가지 변이체 모두 코로나19 바이러스의 스파이크 단백질에 돌연변이가 일어났다.
이 같은 돌연변이는 전염력을 높인다. 세계보건기구(WHO)에 따르면 영국 변이체는 기존보다 36~75% 전염력이 높고, 남아공 변이체는 1.5배 더 잘 전파된다. 또한, 아직 예비연구단계지만, 브라질 변이체는 무려 2.5배 전파력이 센 것으로 분석된다. 이러한 점이 최근 브라질 내 확진자수와 사망자수가 급격히 늘어난 원인으로 추정된다.
브라질 변이체가 갖고 있는 또 다른 문제점이 있다. 영국 변이체는 백신의 효과를 떨어뜨리지 않는 것으로 분석되고 있으나, 남아공과 브라질 변이체는 E484K라는 돌연변이 때문에, 백신 효과를 감소시킬 것으로 추정된다. 백신의 효과를 무력화한다는 의미는 아니다. 여전히 백신 접종은 의미가 있으나, 기존보다는 백신의 항체 생성을 방해할 수 있다는 의미다.
일부에서는 자이르 보우소나루 브라질 대통령의 안일한 태도를 지적한다. 뉴욕타임스에 따르면 보우소나루 대통령은 봉쇄 조치가 경제에 악영향을 미친다며, 봉쇄 조치를 취한 주지사와 시장을 ‘독재자’라고 비난했다. 이번 달 초에는 국민들에게 바이러스에 대해 “그만 투덜대라”라고 말하기도 했다.
