“스트레스가 심해 흰머리가 많이 났다”고 말하는 사람들이 종종 있다. 실제 스트레스 때문에 흰 머리가 날 수 있을까?
사실이다. 흰머리는 모낭(머리를 만드는 기관) 속에서 멜라닌 세포를 만드는 세포가 고장 나면 생긴다. 스트레스로 인해 발생하는 ‘활성산소’는 모낭 속 세포의 색소 기능을 저하시킨다. 스트레스를 많이 받으면 분비되는 ‘아드레날린’ 또한 흰머리를 유발한다. 아드레날린은 두피에 있는 모근 주변의 혈관을 수축시키는 역할을 한다. 혈관이 수축되면 영양공급이 제대로 안 되고 멜라닌도 적게 만들어져 검은 머리 대신 흰머리가 난다. 일본피부과학회에 발표된 쥐 실험 연구에서도 스트레스를 많이 받은 쥐는 백모(白毛)가 많이 났다. 스트레스 때문에 생긴 흰머리는 스트레스가 없어지면 다시 검은색으로 변한다. 양쪽 끝은 검은데 중간 부분만 흰색인 머리카락이 발견되는 것도 이런 이유에서다.
다만, 흰머리가 많이 난다면 스트레스가 아닌 흰머리 유전자가 원인일 수 있다. 흰머리를 나게 하는 유전자는 우성 유전자로, 부모 중 한 명이라도 흰머리가 빨리 나기 시작했다면 자식도 그럴 확률이 높다. 드물지만 갑상선질환, 백반증 같은 질환 때문에 흰머리가 나는 경우도 있다. 이런 병이 있으면 멜라닌 색소가 잘 안 만들어져 흰머리가 난다.
